DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, 940 "Special" with rare gilt damascene finish, 21J, 18S, 14K gold OF recase with attractive engraving detail including small house scene to rear, gold cuvette, "Hamilton Watch Co. Special" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, gilt damascene, s#676059. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.7 dwt (141.0 g). The all gilt damascene pattern of this movement is very rare and the small handful of examples we have seen have been in two distinct small serial number ranges, serial numbers 516601 to 516625 and serial numbers 676055 to 676079, that are listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as having been sold to the Geo B. Barrett Co. of Pittsburgh, PA. This particular example is listed as having been sold to Geo B. Barrett Co. on August 30th, 1910. From the well-known Hamilton collection of Robert Bennett of Olivehurst, California.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine to micro-fine scratches; excellent dial with scratch above seconds-register, few mild fine scratches elsewhere; excellent hands; case shows light wear, ding to lower central rear with corresponding small ding to cuvette, engraving detail with mild overall reduction; tight bow thinned at top, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
